Edouard Drumont
A biography of Drumont (1844-1917), the "pope of antisemitism". Pt. 1 (p. 17-134), "L'homme de la France juive (1844-1886)", deals, inter alia, with the conception, between 1875-85, of "La France juive", its composition and contents, and its rise to bestseller in 1886. Pt. 2 (p. 137-234), "Naissance de l'antisémitisme politique (1886-1892)", discusses Drumont and the right-wing movement led by General Boulanger; "La Fin d'un Monde" (1889), Drumont's treatise on the decadence of modern society, where he deals with the Jewish problem in a more diffuse and insinuating way than in "La France juive"; the failure of the Ligue nationale antisémitique, founded by Drumont in 1889; and antisemitism in France in 1892, on the eve of the establishment of Drumont's journal "La Libre Parole". Pt. 3 (p. 237-338), "À l'assaut de la république moderée: Les premières années de 'La Libre Parole' (1892-1897)", traces the role of Drumont's antisemitic journal in the "Burdeau-Rothschild" affair, the Panama scandal, and the Dreyfus trial. Pt. 4 (p. 341-452), "Le repli conservateur de l'antisémitisme et la marginalisation d'Édouard Drumont (automne 1897-1917)", examines Drumont's involvement in the revival of the Dreyfus Affair; his election to the Chamber of Deputees and his influence on antisemitism in Algiers in 1898; the republican attack on antisemitism in 1898-99; the collapse of "drumontism" between 1900-02; and the decline of Drumont and "La Libre Parole" from 1903 on.
