Exploring immunology : concepts and evidence
MacPherson, who formerly taught experimental pathology at the U. of Oxford and Oriel College Oxford in the UK, and Austyn (immunobiology, U. of Oxford) introduce undergraduate and graduate biology, medical, and veterinary students, as well as scientists and clinicians, to immunology. They begin with key components and concepts for those with little background in the subject, then describe the nature of pathogenic organisms and their interactions with the immune system, including defense mechanisms; the induction and regulation of immune responses at the whole organism, tissue, cellular, and molecular levels, including the functional anatomy of the immune system and innate, T cell-mediated, and antibody-mediated immunity; and allergies and autoimmune diseases and therapies. They include discussion of techniques used in research and clinical case studies to illustrate the basic and clinical aspects of immunology.
