George Ernest Barnett report, 1916

Collection consists of a bound, typescript volume entitled, "The Relief Department of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company." It was written by George Ernest Barnett for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and is dated August 31, 1916. Barnett was often sought for reports of this kind because of his background in economics and knowlege of labor relations. The report gives an objective analysis of the organization of the first railroad employees' relief fund (1880) established in the United States. The plan was known as the "Relief Feature" and was formed by three components: relief, savings, and pension. Statistics and charts are included to substantiate the operating expenses and deficiencies within the relief fund. A summary of the industrial and social implications concludes the report
