Henry James, the major phase
Throughout this volume a study is made of the technique evolved by James to communicate his themes. The gradation of moral awareness in the characters, their dramatic juxtaposition, and the construction of patters of imagery are analyzed to reveal the depth of James' mature work. A final chapter on Portrait of a lady examines James' revisions of this earlier novel as it was reconceived to conform to the style and thought of his "major phase."
