The Grande Arche, marking the bicentenary of the French revolution, was inaugurated at La Defense in the west of Paris on July 14, 1989. It is situated within the historic axis which includes the Louvre, the Tuileries, the Place de la Concorde, the Champs-Elysees, the Etoile and the Arc de Triomphe. The design, by Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, was chosen in a competition initiated by President Mitterrand in 1982. Spreckelsen died in 1987 without seeing his work completed. In this portrait, made between 1983 and 1989, the architect describes his conception of the Grande Arche, and other buildings in Denmark. He also speaks of the joys and difficulties of working in Paris, and of his meeting with President Mitterrand, who followed the work's progress with great interest.
