Indonesia

Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, formed from 17,508 islands and extending for more than 5.000 kilometres between the Asian and Australian mainlands. It has a tropical climate; many of its islands have mountainous interiors, surrounded by coastal plains. The Indonesian islands form part of a large volcanic and earthquake zone; in 2004 the country was struck by a devasting tsunami which claimed hundreds of lives. Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country and the population is increasing year on year. There are more than 300 different ethnic groups, each with its won language and culture. Governing the country is difficult and there has been ethnic unrest in various provinces in recent years. Indonesia is reich in natural resources, including oil, gas, tin, copper and precious metals. Agriculture, forestry and fishing are also important. There is a rich culture of art, music and dance and the beauty of the landscape makes the country a major tourist destination
