Henrietta De Pledge (nee Perrin). Grandfather was George Perrin of Lee & Perrins; moved to Red Hill South Australia in 1886; grew up in Watervale; left home at 21; went to the Adelaide College of Dressmaking; started work at the Kanetta Nursing Home North Adelaide; started training as a nurse when she was 24 at Adelaide Hopsital; finished training in 1914 and went to war in November 1914; took 80 pounds with her from her savings; had to pay for her own uniform, bedding, kit bags, stretchers and mattress; 300 nurses applied for the first intake and she was one of the 30 accepted; joined the hospital ship in Melbourne - SS Kyarra; went to Egypt; at Mena General Hospital; near the pyramids; arrived before Gallipoli; casualties at Lemnos; one sister and one nurse responsible for 72 patients. No transcript for tape 2. Notes: England in October 1915; 14 months in London; France in 1918 at the English hospital in Boulogne; in London when peace declared; decorated with Royal Red Cross and mentioned twice in despatches; returned to Australia in 1919; too sick to work for 12 months; married in 1923 and moved to a farm at Victor Harbor
