In 1792 in Saxony a judge (Adam) is infatuated with the village maiden Eve. He therefore finds Ruprecht, who want to marry Eve, an annoyance. One evening Ruprecht sees Adam climbing in Eve's window and hits him with a jug but the judge escapes unrecognized. Eve's mother takes Ruprecht to Adam's court on account of the broken jug and Ruprecht is jailed. But despite all the intrigues the truth eventually comes out ... Ruprecht is freed while the judge is arrested after being identified by a troup of Prussian soldiers as an escaped thief
