Öd' und leer das Meer

Marcelo Grosman (Photographer)
"In this dystopian collection of photographs, sulphur-colored scenes of crumbling buildings and rubbish dumps expand across each page. However, dispersed throughout these derelict landscapes are brief, performative moments of lust: a couple embracing beneath a pile of cardboard boxes, a pair waltzing bedsides [sic] a demolished house. This contrast between desire and decay suggests star-crossed love affairs, much in line with the collection's title: first appearing in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, Öd' und leer das Meer translates to "empty and desolate is the sea", and encapsulates the hopelessness of love between the opera's protagonists." --Printed Matter website (viewed Jan. 16, 2020)
