This article presents an overview of politeness theory from its beginning to this century by categorising the traditional approach, modified B & L approach, and post-modern approach. It is generally agreed that Brown & Levinson's (1987) traditional politeness theory, which is based on face, is still widely acknowledged as the most comprehensive framework. Later researchers such as Ide (1989), Usami (2002), and Spencer-Oatey (2000) modified Brown & Levinson's approach to accommodate cultural differences. In this century, post-modern researchers have introduced new approaches to politeness, such as Eelen (2001), Watts (2003), and Mills (2003). In this article, I will compare each approach and summarise characteristics among the three approaches to politeness
