Parn is an Estonian animator who satirises and parodies both the old Soviet system and the process of Glasnost. He uses the techniques of repetition and allusion rather than the conventions of story telling. In Time Out (1984) Parn uses his cat hero in an absurdist parody of the art of animation. Breakfast on the Grass (1987) alludes to Manet's painting in a multilayered film which explores problems at the heart of the bureaucratic Soviet system. In Hotel E (1992) a hotel setting is a metaphor for East and West as Parn probes the effects of Glasnost
