Sand, or Peter and the wolf
Caroline Leaf's animated work springs from her expert storytelling and pioneering animation techniques. One significant contribution to animation filmmaking is her technique of manipulating sand on a light-box, a process which she began experimenting with during the creation of Sand, Or Peter And The Wolf, while she was a student at Harvard. The technique involves creating animated movement with images of fine beach sand spread onto a piece of underlit glass, while the sand is manipulated directly under the camera. Sand, Or Peter And The Wolf, was produced at Harvard in Derek Lamb's film animation class. Caroline Leaf later worked as an animator and director at the National Film Board of Canada. Her film The Street garnered an Academy Award nomination in 1976. She taught animation at Harvard from 1972 to 1977, and by 1988, she was a partner in Media Ink, Inc., with a weekly animated political spot on NBC's Sunday Today show
