[Tassilo Adam film screenings in Java]
In 1989-1990 a Fulbright Scholarship enabled Deena Burton to take copies of Tassilo Adam's ethnographic dance films, which she had edited, back to Indonesia. She presented screenings for Indonesian artists and scholars, eliciting their comments and background information. These screenings were recorded on 8mm videocassette. Adam's films are not visible on the screen, and there is no dance content. The language spoken is usually Bahasa Indonesia, but the participants may speak Javanese among themselves. This recording contains two such screenings, the first for a group at the home of Theresia Suharti, a member of a family of performers at the kraton Yogyakarta and a dancer and teacher in her own right. Burton studied with her at the Center for World Music in California. The participants include four "Ibus"; since Ibu is a feminine honorific, this indicates that four prominent women, probably dancers or teachers of note, were present. In the screening for Pak Ngaliman [Pak is an honorific], a former dancer and teacher in Solo, the voices of Burton, Skip La Plante, and others are heard conversing in English off-camera
