William Andrews Clark was born 8 January 1839 in Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania to John and Mary Andrews Clark. "Both John and Mary were of Scotch-Irish descent, and Mary claimed a strain of Huguenot blood. Their parents were born in County Tyrone, Ireland, but soon after the Revolution they settled in America."--Page 7 . In March 1869, John married Katherine Stauffer also of Connellsville. The Clarks lived in several areas including Chicago, Illinois and St. Louis Missouri where William engaged in business, before eventually settling in Montana. In Montana he became a successful mining magnate, at one time owning six mines in several states. Other business enterprises " ... included banking, public utilities, lumbering, cattle raising and beet sugar production."--Page 80. Katherine Stauffer Clark died in 1893. After having become involved in political affairs for some years, in 1901 " ... Clark was sworn in as United States Senator from Montana."--P. 97. He married " ... Anna Eugenia LaChapelle on May 25, 1901 ..."--P. 100 in Marseille, France. "At the age of eighty-six, William Andrews Clark died of pneumonia at his Fifth Avenue New York City, New York house, March 2, 1925. He was the last of the pioneers who had made fortunes in the west"--P. 88. Descendants lived in New York, California and elsewhere
