The Lemon Grove incident

In July of 1930, the Lemon Grove California School Board decided to separate the Mexican-American school children from their Angol counterparts by building a separate school for them. This was done without consulting their parents. Here is presented the history of this incident and the struggle waged by the Hispanic community of Lemon Grove to oppose this action. Consequently this issue was addressed in the court case of Roberto Alvarez versus the Lemon Grove School Board where the school board's action was ruled a violation of the Mexican-American children's rights. This served as the basis for a later satewide case ruling against school segregation for Hispanics
